ANNOUNCEMENT OF FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR
 APPLIED RESEARCH


1. Introduction/Background

The Applied Training Project is one of the eight projects of the Shared Vision Program of the Nile Basin Initiative. Its mandate is capacity building in Integrated Water Resources Management for water professionals in the Nile Basin countries. The implementation of the project is supported by National Coordinators and a network of Lead Training Institutions in each country which coordinate the project’s activities at national level in close collaboration with Directorates of Water Resources.

2. The objectives of the ATP are to:

  • Strengthen capacity in selected subject areas of integrated water resources planning and management within the region in the medium term;
  • Strengthen centers with the capacity to develop and deliver training programs in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM); and
  • Expand frequency and scope of basin interchange among water professionals involved in capacity building activities.

3. Announcement

In order to build capacity in the research and training institutions as well as gather data there is an applied research facility programme to promote research in the water resources sector in the basin.

The ATP hereby announces the funding opportunity for Applied and Collaborative Research for the year 2008/09

3.1 Objective of the facility

The objective of the applied research facility is to facilitate trainers and researchers in the water sector to carry out applied research and baseline studies in the chosen thematic areas.

3.2 Thematic areas for developing research proposals

Groundwater management, surface water hydrology, watershed management, water quality, climate change and integrated water resources management.

3.3 Who should apply for 2008?

  1. Academicians in Universities and tertiary water training institutions
  2. Water professionals in tertiary training institutions,
  3. Water professionals in research centers,

 3.4 Duration

The duration of the research is one calendar year.

3.5 What the fund will cover

The research fund will cover the following:

  • Cost of data collection
  • Cost of purchase of consumables,
  • Cost of analysis of samples where applicable,

3.6 Format of research proposal

The proposal which shall be not more that five pages will have the following sections: title, introduction, literature review, statement of the problem, objectives, expected outputs, materials and methods, budget and references.

3.7 Requirements

  1. Applicants should direct their applications to the Regional Project Manager of the Applied Training Project with a copy to the National Project Coordinator in their country.
  2. The closing date for the applications is 15th July, 2008.
  3. Only selected applicants will be notified for further steps
