Ethno-botany Cluster

LAST UPDATE 2010-01-15

Ethnobotany is one of the five clusters funded by VicRes. Currently there are 22 funded projects in the Ethnobotany cluster. Ethnobotany has a potential of leading into new discoveries and value addition of products that can help improve livelihoods of local communities in the LVB. To successfully arrive there, researches must position themselves strategically and work on synergies that will help them make a difference.

Realizing a value of the ethnobotany researches must take into consideration a need to add value (i.e. to have a scientific rationalization on existing ethno botany & IK issues and products), to validate claims on existing IK knowledge from a scientific perspective, enhancement of efficiency, efficacy and safety of the products- especially the medicinal ones, packaging/branding, standardization and quality control of IK products. Mining of the products has to take into consideration sustainability of the ethno botany products and to search for alternatives products (in the face of decreasing known biological resources)
