Aquaculture Cluster
Aquaculture research in the region is still characterized by paucity of information and knowledge gaps. To successfully address gaps in its development, the cluster needs to provide objective information and undertake informed analysis of scenarios and discourses of aquaculture practices, designs and systems in the region, using collaborative approaches. It should start with repackaging already existing information on discourses and traditional practices and technologies.
Although concern on the impact of aquaculture on environmental health is not an immediate priority, there was need to understand its contribution to food security and wealth creation in the region. Its contribution as compared to captured fisheries resources, its scope and the populations affected need to be documented. There was need also to harmonize approaches to aquaculture research and development for ease of monitoring of its impact on socio-economic aspects and the environment.
VicRes researchers are encouraged to shun away from straightjacket thinking of aquaculture development (i.e. dependence on ponds) and explore alternatives such as dependence on river water such as use of plastic tanks and, use of rainwater and wastewater. In a way, such innovations would reduce pressure on exiting water resources and wetland ecosystems, and increase aquaculture products for food security and wealth creation.
